What are force and test systems and what are they used for?

Not everything in quality is measured in millimeters: sometimes you have to measure how much force a part can withstand or exert. That is what force and test systems are for. In this guide we explain what they are, what they are used for and which ones we carry from the Starrett brand.

What are force and test systems?

These are instruments that measure force, torque and strength, that is, how hard something pushes, pulls or holds. Instead of measuring a dimension, they measure an effort: the force to compress a spring, the tension an assembly withstands, the torque to tighten or open a cap, or the strength of a material.

What are they for?

  • Measuring tensile and compression force: how hard a component pulls or pushes.
  • Testing springs: verifying the force at a given compression.
  • Measuring torque: tightening force or resistance to rotation.
  • Assembly quality control: confirming that a part withstands the specified force.

The force and test systems we carry

We carry Starrett's force and test range, from portable gages to complete test stands. These are the units, under the same name you will find on our website:

Starrett equipmentWhat is it?
DFG and DFCDigital force gauges; measure tensile and compressive force directly
MTL-110 and MTL-330Motorized test stands to apply and measure force in a controlled way
MTHManual test stand
FMMForce measurement system with software and reports
MMS and MMDForce and material testing systems

In summary

  • Force and test systems measure force, torque and strength, not dimensions
  • Used to test springs, assemblies, tightening and materials
  • They range from portable gages to complete test benches
  • We carry the Starrett range: force gages, test stands and materials testing systems
