Electronic, dial and vernier / pocket
The caliper (or vernier) is one of the most versatile tools in the shop: with a single instrument you measure a part's outside, inside, depth and step dimensions.
It is used daily for quickly checking dimensions during production and inspection. Depending on the accuracy and convenience you need, there are three types: electronic (direct digital readout and data output), dial (dial-indicator reading, no battery) and vernier (economical and electronics-free).
They offer resolution down to 0.01 mm (0.0005") and ranges from 0–150 mm to 0–1000 mm.
