MetalsWhat is C18150 copper and what is it used for? Beryllium-free chromium-zirconium copper
C18150 copper is chromium-zirconium copper, beryllium-free. In this guide we explain what C18150 copper is, its composition, its properties, what it is used for and the sizes we stock.
What is C18150 copper?
C18150 copper (copper-chromium-zirconium, CuCrZr) combines very high electrical and thermal conductivity with good mechanical strength and excellent resistance to softening. Hardenable by heat treatment, it is an RWMA Class 2 material, beryllium-free; the zirconium improves creep resistance and reduces electrode sticking in resistance welding.
Chemical composition of C18150 copper
This is the typical composition of C18150 copper (UNS C18150 / RWMA Class 2 / EN CW106C / DIN 2.1293 standard):
| Element | Contents | What for? |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.50 – 1.50 % | Chromium: increases strength and hardness through precipitation |
| Zirconium (Zr) | 0.02 – 0.20 % | Zirconium: creep resistance and resistance to softening |
| Copper (Cu) | Balance | Base metal |
C18150 properties and treatment
C18150 (copper-chromium-zirconium) combines very high conductivity with good mechanical strength and excellent resistance to softening. It is hardenable by heat treatment and an RWMA Class 2, beryllium-free material. Zirconium improves creep resistance and reduces electrode sticking, which is why it is highly valued in resistance welding.
What is it for? Applications of C18150
C18150 copper is mainly used in:
- Resistance welding electrodes
- Welding wheels and tips
- Nozzles and tips
- Electrode holders and arms
- Back-up bars
- Continuous casting molds
